Well I'll give him credit

He actually apologized. Maybe it's caving to the pressure of public perception, but I doubt it.

Top 5 Movies of 2005

Wednesday, December 28th, 2005

After reading Roger Ebert's Top 10 Movies of 2005, I thought I would chime in with my Top 5, and oddly enough, I actually agree with some of his choices. So, without further ado, here are my top 5 choices for 2005

  1. Crash
This, by far was the best movie of 2005.  Everything from the visuals, to the music, to the subject matter, everything about this movie was a pure joy. It had me holding my breath during so many scenes, and I think it helped communicate the dynamic, strained, and often times violent race relationships here in Los Angeles. The beauty of this movie was that there was no easy answers, no easily spotted bad guys. It showed just how human each and every one of us are, and therefore, how flawed each of us are.I really cannot say enough about this movie.
  2. Cinderella Man
I feel guilty for placing this one at number two, because it was really an incredible movie, with a very lovable cast. The story behind Jimmy Braddock is really an amazing one, and I think this movie captured the magic of that era. This movie had some amazingly poignant scenes, and some incredible messages. In an era where your word doesn't count for much, and it seems where more and more people are becoming flakier and flakier, it's really wonderful to see a movie where a persons integrity is valued so much.
  3. Walk The Line
This one again pains me to place below another because Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Weatherspoon were flat out perfect in their roles as John and June Cash. While one could see a similarity between some elements of this movie and "Ray", I feel that this movie was far better than Ray. I felt like this movie, more so than Ray, pulled you into it, and made you a fan of not only his music, but of his life.
  4. Shopgirl
For some reason, this movie didnt get as much play as I think it deserved. Shopgirl to me was a joy to watch. It was painful in all the right places, and funny in all the right places. This movie had such a mellow tone, the acting by Claire Danes, Steve Martin, and Jason Schwartzman was perfectly subdued. This movie really was just top notch.
  5. Batman Begins
This movie reinvents the entire Batman movie franchise, by actually making it a serious, dark, gritty movie, rather than the normal campy Batman flicks. Chris Nolan handled this movie superbly, and the amazing thing is how Christian Bale went from 125 pounds on the Machinist, straight to this role. Really dedicated actor. You don't even have to be a fan of Batman, or comic book movies to enjoy this one. It truly captured the spirit of Year One.

What if?

Sunday, January 22nd, 2006

I've been thinking about Iraq and Iran situations, and I was wondering.
What if the entire war with Iraq wasnt about oil, wasnt about WMD's, wasnt about Sadaam at all? What if the entire thing was about Iran, and Iraq was a decoy to set up a base of operations from which to engage in war with Iran?

Let's walk through how that would play out:
It's 2002, and you have intel that says that Iran is working with the Russians to enrich uranium for the purpose of building nukes.
You have Hussein, who you know wouldnt mind taking the opportunity to join with Iran in a conflict with the US. You have the Saudi's who might allow the use of airspace, but doubtful that they would want too much involvement for fear of their neighbors firepower. You have Russia, who is helping enrich the uranium, so you know what side they're on.

So what do you do?

In any street confrontation, there is usually some guy, usually the shortest, who is running his mouth constantly, firing everyone up. He's got the small dog complex, the Napoleonic complex, and is just running around trying to make you look bad.

So you sock him in the mouth. Or in this case, take him out, and institute a democracy. Now, you have a Western friendly base from which to attack Iran in '06 or '07.

Okay, admittedly, this reads more like a bad movie, but the point is, what if Iraq was just step 1 in dealing with a bigger problem, Iran?

Helen Thomas is an idiot...

Thursday, January 26th, 2006

So, Helen Thomas was shunned by President Bush at a press conference, because she was going to ask some "tough" questions of the president.
"She also had another question at the ready, just in case, this one about the president's contention that a 28-year-old wiretapping law known as FISA is out of date, which prompted him to order the National Security Agency to conduct a secret electronic surveillance program that Democrats contend is illegal. 'You keep saying it's a 1978 law, but the Constitution 200 years old. Is that out of date, too?'"

Okay moron, the Constitution isn't centered around technology. What a freaking misdirection.  Technology doesn't change whether someone has the freedom of speech, or freedom from a state religion, etc.
However, many of the wiretapping bills were written during the rotary phone era, and were never extended to cell phones, and newer systems.
So when technology moves past the scope of the letter of the law, the law is out of date.

Her other "I was gonna ask him!" question is just as retarded, and misleading.

Helen Thomas, please spend your free time actually thinking before you speak. You'd save the rest of us the need to laugh at your inane statements.

Thank you.

Mosley v. Vargas

Saturday, February 25th, 2006

Well, I'm not sure how many of you are into boxing, but tonight there looks to be a pretty decent fight coming on PPV.
Now, this fight would have been way more exciting about 5 years ago, but hey, I'll take what I can get.
For those that don't know, Shane Mosley is going to be fighting Fernando Vargas.

Let me say, going into this, I am completely biased. I used to be the webmaster for the Mosley's, as well as personal friends, and let's just say things got "legal".

So, that being said, let's get into the fight.

My gut says Shane will win. Part of me thinks Vargas could pull an upset, but I see this fight going one of two ways.

Really exciting, or really really boring. I think Vargas will be aggressive, and not try to box, which, for Shane, always makes a good fight, but I wonder if Shane will take advantage of the openings.

Chains chin is completely tested, but Vargas' is a bit suspect. However, Vargas has weight and general size of Shane, so I can't see a knockout, really.

Now, here's to hoping its a memorable 12 rounds :)

PureVolume.com

Saturday, February 11th, 2006

Okay, I am probably so insanely behind the times on this one, but seriously, PureVolume just freakin rocks. Seriously rocks.

Also, it has a really slick design courtesy of Ryan Sims @ Neubix Studios.

I've found some really awesome stuff there, but my personal fave of the moment is Bleed The Dream. Check out their song Who's Killing Who. Great stuff....

Thank you's and notices

Wednesday, June 29th, 2005

Thanks to Unmatched Style for the mention, and the kind words :) Also thanks to all the support from everyone who's been kind enough offer some solid advice and help.

Now, I need to make an announcement of sorts:
  • To all the of the people who feel that insulting me, insulting my fiance, insulting my site are going to hurt my feelings, you're way off. To be honest, if your brain has been developmentally stunted to the point to where your last refuge is petty name calling, then my only response is giggling like a mad man.
  • This site is an PERSONAL website. I don't care if your grandma's screen reader didnt pick up all of the links, or if there is an extra div lying around. It's an art site, chances are, it's going to focus more on visuals. My whole point in making it CSS based was to try it, being as I had only made 1 other CSS site, and it, hopefully, will make future redesigns quicker. Also, I wanted to make a CSS site that looks different than EVERY other freakin CSS site on the CSS portals. Most of them look like every other site, hence, I wanted to try to be a bit more original, and not look like a typical CSS site.
  • Anyone know anything about querying complex data structures in PHP to make the data as relational, and the site as data-driven as possible? (Just asking, I have a project at work going that I need to do that with...)
  • This is primarily an art site, but it also reflects my other interests, etc, and is basically about me. If you cannot appreciate artwork by people of differing religious, political, ethnic, or cultural differences than you, chances are, this site will just make you unhappy. I don't hate anyone, I don't wish ill on anyone, and truth be told, I admire and respect a ton of people who I disagree with on very important issues. But I'm not gonna cry because I dont know how to separate artwork and ideology. If you are that way, leave now. It's probably way past your bed time anyways.

That's all for now, thanks :)

Alterform V. X2

Saturday, June 18th, 2005

Well, here it is. Welcome to the new version of Alterform, powered by the Expanse Content Management System, which has been developed by Jason and I, and will be ready for the public VERY soon.
This site is now completely table-less, and all designed with CSS. This is now my second site using only CSS, and I think it came out rather well.

Also, if you're using Firefox on the PC, and notice some problems, head over to the Info Page to read more about it.

Thanks to Tom and Josh for their help in testing it, and of course, many many thanks to my fiance, who put up with my rambling about it for the last 3 weeks :)

Comment posting changes

Tuesday, June 07th, 2005

Because of the INSANE amount of comment spam I am getting, I added code to check every comment for certain words, and if it has any of those words (even if its just part of another word, like pokerific), it's getting blocked.

It's annoying to get a crapload of HTML markup in the comments and my inbox. You'd think the idiots would realize I dont allow HTML in posts.

Maroons.
