I've been thinking about Iraq and Iran situations, and I was wondering.
What if the entire war with Iraq wasnt about oil, wasnt about WMD's, wasnt about Sadaam at all? What if the entire thing was about Iran, and Iraq was a decoy to set up a base of operations from which to engage in war with Iran?
Let's walk through how that would play out:
It's 2002, and you have intel that says that Iran is working with the Russians to enrich uranium for the purpose of building nukes.
You have Hussein, who you know wouldnt mind taking the opportunity to join with Iran in a conflict with the US. You have the Saudi's who might allow the use of airspace, but doubtful that they would want too much involvement for fear of their neighbors firepower. You have Russia, who is helping enrich the uranium, so you know what side they're on.
So what do you do?
In any street confrontation, there is usually some guy, usually the shortest, who is running his mouth constantly, firing everyone up. He's got the small dog complex, the Napoleonic complex, and is just running around trying to make you look bad.
So you sock him in the mouth. Or in this case, take him out, and institute a democracy. Now, you have a Western friendly base from which to attack Iran in '06 or '07.
Okay, admittedly, this reads more like a bad movie, but the point is, what if Iraq was just step 1 in dealing with a bigger problem, Iran?

Interesting idea. Unfortunately, Iraq would be an awful place to use as a base of operations with the country being as unstable and unsafe as it is. I'll be VERY surprised if we attempt to do in Iran what we've done in Iraq knowing what we know now about the likely insurgency that will spring up. If action is taken against Iran it will probably be mostly economic in nature. Maybe. Who knows... if this plays out as you've said I'll give you a shiny silver dollar!
